Strengths

  • Single-wire, self-clocking topology: one data conductor plus power, which keeps cabling simpler than two-wire clocked chips and avoids a high-frequency clock line running alongside the string.
  • Wide 5 to 24V pixel-supply range with both RGB and RGBW options, giving flexibility to run higher-voltage strings for longer spans with less voltage drop.
  • Selectable PWM: the 3300Hz setting is comfortably flicker-free for camera work up to roughly 110fps, which covers typical broadcast and slow-motion capture with sensible margin.

Limitations

  • 8-bit-per-channel resolution (256 levels per colour) is standard but can show visible stepping on slow, low-level fades compared with higher-bit-depth drivers; and with no redundant data line, one failed pixel interrupts every pixel downstream of it.
  • The PWM rate is selectable: only the 3300Hz mode is rated camera-safe to 110fps, so the lower 800Hz mode is marginal for on-camera use and should be avoided where a shutter is present.

Overview

The SM16511 is a single-wire, self-clocking addressable LED driver: each pixel carries an integrated controller that latches its slice of the serial data stream and forwards the remainder down the chain, so only one data conductor plus power is needed (no separate clock line). It supports 8-bit-per-channel colour, RGB and RGBW configurations, a 5 to 24V pixel supply, and a selectable 800/3300Hz PWM rate. In its 3300Hz mode it stays comfortably flicker-free for camera capture up to about 110fps. It ships in an SOP10/16 package and offers no redundant data line.
